Dead Space

Decent, if disgusting shooter. Has the wierd configuration of looking over the shoulder and controls could be better but graphically amazing and the story line is very good.

A cool feature is that you interact with holograms scattered over the surface areas of everything which is a very cool touch. As well the lighting and sound is incredible; it will keep you jumping. Some scenes are right out of the original Alien with the protagonist creeping down tight corridors with dimly lit strobes and scattered shadows. Worth a play.

Bioshock

bioshock

Fun, interesting, compelling... at it's best art and at it's worst humor. Well worth a play through.

Set in an alternate history 1960, the game places the player in the role of a plane crash survivor named Jack, who must explore the underwater city of Rapture, and survive attacks by the mutated beings and mechanical drones that populate it. The game incorporates elements found in role-playing and survival games, and is described by the developers and Levine as a "spiritual successor" to their previous titles in the System Shock series.

Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past

zelda3-logo

Downloaded this on the Wii Virtual Console the other day. What a great game. Gabe and I can sit for a long time solving the puzzles and beating the bosses in this game. Truly one of the best RPGs ever made... In total 2-D 16-bit graphics. Great stuff.

Super Mario Galaxy

supermariogalaxy_400

I've never played any game like this. The physics are awesome -- you're out in space and pretty much every piece of rock has earth normal gravity of it's own. The playability is awesome too with the great use of the wii controls.

But what pushed it over the top for me is that fact that I can play it with Gabe. He can use his own controller, point it at the screen to pick up power-ups or grab enemies to hold them. So we play the game together, which is so cool. Great game!

Got A Wii

wii

Finally went out and picked up a Nintendo Wii.

My god the thing is fun. Ridiculously, ludicrously fun.

Hiyat and I had to tear ourselves away from the Wii Sports Boxing, Bowling and Tennis to go to bed. What a great system -- the controls and simplicity are what make it a joy. Not one for hardcore games, it's built for those that just want some quick fun with friends.

She ended up beating me in every. Single. Game. Me, the vid kid -- I've been playing video games since the Pong home system came out. A testiment to how accessible the system is.

Star Trek: Encounters

encounters_06b_400_01

Why do Star Trek games have to suck?
Klingon Academy was good. The rest... weren't. Birth of the Federation was OK... but this one is almost unplayable.
Control is hard, the missions are long (with no save points!) and the graphics aren't very good -- all you have to do is render a couple of space ships guys!

A disappointment. But I'm a Trekkie so I'll still play it ;)

Beyond The Red Line

beyondtheredline_400

Looks like an awesome Battlestar Galactica based linux game!

From the about page:

What is Beyond the Red Line

Beyond the Red Line is a stand-alone total conversion for the award-winning Freespace 2 released by Volition and Interplay for the PC. It is based on the popular new tv-show Battlestar Galactica. No, not the one from the 70s.

Will I need Freespace 2 to play it?

No, Beyond the Red Line is a stand-alone conversion and will not require Freespace 2. All you need for playing will be included in the download.

Is it free?

Absolutely. The game is made by fans for the fans, no profit is being made from any part of the project. Altough we could use some pizzas and coke to keep our mortal bodies running.

When will it be done?

When it's done.

Will the game feature newtonian "real space" physics?

No, original Freepsace 2 was designed as an arcade space shooter. However, we have included some new additions to the game that allow you to pull of some of the manouvers you see in the show.

Will there be multiplayer support?

Yes, multiplayer will feature such gameplay modes as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, Gauntlet missions and possibly some coop missions.

Will the main campaign story follow the tv-show?

Download the demo and see for youself.

What sort of computer do I need to run the game?

Beyond the Red Line will run on a wide range of computer specifications. There will be many options you can tweak to make the performance optimal on your computer.

Will I need a joystick?

No, you can also use mouse, gamepad, or keyboard.

What kind of ships will be flyable?

You can fly Viper Mk II, Viper Mk VII and Raptor in the demo. More ships will possibly be featured in the main release.

ActionCube

ac_shot_12_400

Looks like a sweet FPS for Linux... and it's team based like Counter Strike. If it's good, Hiyat's going to kill me. It took a month to get rid of my CS addiction.

Tron 2.0

This game rocks, at least so far. The upgrade interface within the game is a little difficult to understand, but the game just looks so damn cool that it can get away with some problems. And, you can ride lightcycles! 8/10.

Doom 3

Doom 3 is a fun but essentially vapid game. Its a technically beautiful acheivement, with real-time lighting and shadows, amazingly rendered textures, and realistic blood and guts. Compared to a game like Half-life 2, however, Doom 3 essentially feels like you are walking through a big carnival fun-house with creatures popping up at you with no AI. Not a dissapointment, but not revolutionary, either. 7/10 for effort.

Half-Life 2

They call this the best game ever made. Perhaps it is. A winding, Kafka-esqe plot with stunning visuals. Im about an hour into the game and it rocks. Its certainly perhaps the best first person shooter ever made -- with Half-life 1 being the second, and it held the title for probably 5 years.

Prince of Persia 2: Warrior Within

Decent game. A little bit of a let down after the first Prince of Persia game. Darker, moodier, more fighting and less puzzles. I certainly hope they return to the lighter side with the third game.
